What is a Closing Shift?

Brief explanation on what we mean by 'Closing Shift' and how to use this setting

Written by Ciaran

The purpose of the "Is This a Closing Shift" setting is to hide the shift end time from employees.

  • If you select "Yes", the shift end time will not be visible to the employee.

  • If you want employees to see the scheduled end time of their shift, leave this setting as "No".

Why is this setting used?

The "Is This a Closing Shift" option is most commonly used in the hospitality industry, such as bars, restaurants, and hotels.

In these environments, while staff often have a fixed start time, their finish time can be difficult to predict. For example, a bar manager may schedule an employee to start at 5:00pm and expect the venue to close at 11:00pm. However, if the venue is particularly busy, or if additional cleaning, closing, or setup tasks are required, employees may need to stay later to complete all necessary work.

In these situations, employees are scheduled with a defined start time, but their actual finish time depends on when all closing duties have been completed. Hiding the end time helps reflect this operational flexibility.

This type of scheduling is generally less common in retail environments, where shift end times tend to be more predictable.
